(1981-1987) I place these images into two separate figurative portfolios (Scapes) which are all b&w large format (4” x 5”) - containing approximately 600 negatives & transparencies, of 34 concepts that I started in my studio on Chestnut street in Chicago. And (Coatings)which were created entirely in my two NYC studios and primarily color and (8” x 10”) large format transparencies, there are approximately 300 negatives & transparencies, of 26 concepts using Sinar Bron view cameras. I was aware of Robert Mapplethorpe was shooting his figurative work at the same time a few blocks away in his studio in Manhattan but I didn’t want the subject to be provocative. I wanted these images to be more about the design aspects. Since I had studied fine art/painting in college this was the time that I finally broke through to painting with a camera and why these two portfolios are the heart of my creative endeavors.
